Remarkable conservation effort by an Individual Tribe<\/h2><\/div>

Hogave Conservation Center is located at the foot of Mt. Michael in the Lufa district of the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. The total virgin forest area is well over 200 square kilometers evolving around Mt. Michael and extending to the Crater Mountains which more than 50 tribes or villages have ownership rights.

The Hogave tribe has ownership rights to about 20 square kilometers and they have conserved that part of the forest. <\/p>

Overall, 783 trees and 1 liana with DBH \u2265 10 cm were recorded in the one hectare plot with mean DBH of 21.29 \u00b1 12.76 (\u00b1 SD) for the trees.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Contamination of rivers, creeks, and springs that the forest provides which serve as a drinking water source for the local population.

Deforestation
<\/strong>Forest areas are cleared as people intend to do gardening and building huts.

Potential Mineral Mining<\/strong>
Unidentified mining company exploring the area and identifying many rivers and creeks as having valuable mineral resources.

Potential logging
<\/strong>Common in other areas of the province, there is a risk of logging companies approaching to cut down trees and gather timber for profit<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Steps take by HCC Management to tackle challenges faced by Conservation Initiative<\/h3><\/div>

Upon prolonged awareness and consultation, the indigenous people of Hogave opted for conservation of their forest. Hence it was declared the \u201cHogave Conservation Area\u201d late in 1987 and this communal agreement is still effective for over 35 years now.  <\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
